Description

The lakes are set in the beautiful and idyllic settings of Maunsel House situated in North Newton.

Lake 1 is the first lake you will come to from the main car park.

The lake itself is around 1 acre in size with a depth from 3 ft to 8 ft. There is small island 1/3 of the way down the lake. There is also a deep channel that runs down the left hand bank as you look towards lake 2. This is only two meters out from the bank and is a real fish holding zone. This is shown on the venue map.

The lake holds a good head of carp these carp are  stunning looking creatures they are in this lake being grown on for future stock for like two.  But they are already approaching 20 lbs in weight and well worth targeting if lake 2 is busy.

There is also a good head of tench with an average size of around 5 lbs and Bream to 8 lbs. This lake is always best fished early morning or late evening.

The tench and bream do like a fishmeal groundbait with worm or corn over the top. There is also some quality roach and crucian carp and perch in the lake.

Lake 2 is Taunton Angling Association’s premier carp water. The water is a typical old estate lake surrounded by overhanging willow trees, mature bank side vegetation and beds lily pads situated around the water’s edge.

The water contains both mirror and common carp with the largest 2-3 fish going 30 lb + at the right time of year. The remaining stock consists of a good head of upper 20 lb, mid 20 lb and low 20 lb carp including a number of double figure fish.

Although the venue is a relatively small water, the carp can be extremely tricky to catch at times and some of the fish can go uncaught for long periods of time. There are numerous features around and below the water to set a trap, however, do not ignore the near margins as the fish often move under the rod tips.

Most tactics will work on Maunsel Lake 2 at the right time of year and in the right conditions. The key is to keep things simple and consistent.

Within Taunton Angling Association’s Bye-laws, all anglers fishing Maunsel Lake 2 are to pay attention to the specific Maunsel Lake 2 rules when fishing for carp.

There are a limited number of night permits available for Maunsel Lake 2, however, the allocation is currently full and a waiting list is in operation. Any member looking for further information should email the club at Tauntonanglingassociation@gmail.com River Tone
